In short
- The Royal Kennel Club Health Standard lists, breed by breed, the tests a breeder should complete before breeding (Good Practice) and further tests it recommends (Best Practice).
- The Standard is guidance for breeders, not a registration rule — which is exactly why it is worth asking a stud owner which of it they have done.
- Panels differ enormously by breed — the Labrador Retriever’s Good Practice list has 9 tests, the Cocker Spaniel’s 2. A test that matters in one breed can mean nothing in another.
- Breed club schemes the Standard lists — heart, kidney and similar — are run by the clubs, and the Royal Kennel Club does not record their results.
- A hip score is best read against its own breed’s median, which the BVA publishes and the table shows.
- Ask for each result in the dog’s registered name, and check it yourself on the Royal Kennel Club’s Health Test Results Finder.
“Health tested” in an advert tells you almost nothing until you know tested for what — and the answer depends entirely on the breed. This page puts the answer for every breed in one table, taken from the Royal Kennel Club Health Standard, with each breed’s hip score median from the BVA where one is published. Each breed name links to that breed’s page, where every test is listed in full with what it involves.
How to read the table
Good Practice is the Royal Kennel Club’s stated minimum: the tests it says a breeder should complete before breeding from a dog of that breed. Best Practice is what it recommends on top. Breed club schemes are tests the Standard points to but which the breed clubs run themselves; the Royal Kennel Club does not record the results, so ask for the certificate.
Tests come in two families. Screening schemes — hips, elbows, eyes — are examinations by a vet or a panel, scored or graded; DNA tests look for a specific mutation, and most come back Clear, Carrier or Affected (a few, such as DM, report a level of risk instead) — or Hereditary Clear, a status inherited from clear parents rather than tested in the dog itself. Health testing explained covers both, and Hereditary Clear explained covers the result that trips most people up.
The hip median is the middle score of the dogs of that breed scored in the BVA scheme over the period shown on the breed page. Lower is better, and a dog’s own score is best read against it — see hip and elbow scores explained.

We have not published a panel for 43 other breeds yet. That is a gap in our guidance, not a statement that the breed needs no testing — ask the breeder what applies, and check the Royal Kennel Club’s own page for the breed.
Before you rely on it
- The Standard changes. This table follows the Royal Kennel Club Health Standard as published in August 2026. Tests are added as DNA tests become available and as breed clubs ask; check the Royal Kennel Club’s own page for the breed before a mating.
- A result belongs to one dog. Ask for each result in the dog’s registered name, not the parents’, unless it is a Hereditary Clear status — and then ask how many generations back it rests on.
- Some breeds have registration rules too. Separately from the Health Standard, the Royal Kennel Club runs DNA control schemes for a few breeds: imported dogs, and litters by artificial insemination from overseas studs, must be tested before the puppies can be registered.
- No record is not a bad record. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.
- A clear panel is not a guarantee. Tests find what they test for. A screening scheme is a snapshot, and a DNA test covers one mutation, not every cause of a condition.
On Breed Right, a stud listing shows a health result only once our team has checked it against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records — see how verification works.
Sources
- The Royal Kennel Club — the Royal Kennel Club Health Standard — The source of every Good Practice and Best Practice entry in the table, and of the breed club schemes it lists (Health Standard KC/HS/08/26, August 2026). The tier names are the Standard’s own. It is guidance for breeders, not a registration rule.
- The Royal Kennel Club Health Standard KC/HS/08/26 (PDF, August 2026) — The document itself, breed by breed. Where the Royal Kennel Club’s web pages and this PDF differ for a breed, the table follows the PDF.
- The Royal Kennel Club — DNA control schemes, 17 December 2024 — That a few breeds have DNA control schemes applying to imported dogs and to AI from overseas stud dogs before progeny can be registered.
- BVA — Hip Dysplasia Scheme breed-specific statistics 2025 — The breed hip medians. We use the five-year table the BVA tells breeders to compare against, falling back to the fifteen-year table where no dog of the breed was scored in the last five years. The cut-offs are ours, not the BVA’s: we show no median where fewer than 5 dogs were scored, and mark one “small sample” under 50.
- The Royal Kennel Club — Health Test Results Finder — Where anyone can look up the results the Royal Kennel Club holds for a registered dog. Breed club scheme results are not held there.
- Breed Right — how verification works — What our own check of a listed dog’s results covers, and what it does not.
Breed Right is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to The Royal Kennel Club or the British Veterinary Association. Where we could not source a claim we left it out rather than guessing.
