Whelpy — the software behind the kennel

Breed Right is the shopfront: where a stud dog or a litter is advertised, and where a claim about a dog gets checked by hand. Whelpy is the back office: where the kennel behind that listing is actually run. Both are made by Whelpy Ltd — which is why this page is an advert, and says so.

About this page

Advert

This page promotes our own other product. Breed Right and Whelpy are both run by Whelpy Ltd, so we are not a neutral reviewer here — Whelpy is ours, and its paid plan is how it makes money. Read the rest of the page in that light.

Three things stay true whatever you decide:

  • Nothing on Breed Right needs a Whelpy account.
  • Having one changes nothing about how your listing is checked, how quickly it is checked, or where it appears.
  • They are separate products, with separate accounts, separate sign-ins and separate prices. Nothing passes between them.

What it is

Kennel management, not a directory

Whelpy describes itself as keeping your matings, litters, puppy health and buyers in one calm, organised place — with the council record book and your accounts alongside them. It runs in a browser and installs on a phone.

Litters and whelping

Matings, due dates, the pre-whelp temperature chart, the whelping night itself and every puppy — all from one litter page, on a phone, with one hand free.

Puppy health and growth

Daily puppy weights and growth curves across the whole litter, with an automatic vaccination and worming schedule that produces a due list telling you what is owed today — instead of leaving it to a wall calendar.

Buyers and go-home

Reservations, go-home dates, messages and contracts — plus a private portal where each buyer watches their own puppy grow. Buyers reach it by an invite link the breeder sends, and set a password on first visit — no app to install and nothing to pay.

It follows the rules you are actually licensed under

Licensed breeding is not one rulebook across the UK. Whelpy asks which one applies to you — Schedule 6 in England and Scotland, Schedule 1 in Wales, Schedule 4 in Northern Ireland — and then your record book, your registers and every regulation reference follow that choice.

That matters at an inspection, where the officer is checking against the schedule your licence was issued under and not a generic template.

And the paperwork, on the paid plan

Whelpy Pro adds what a licensed breeder has to be able to produce on request: the printable council record book an inspection asks for, medication and mileage logs, deposits, and income and expenses totted up by HMRC tax year.

Whelpy builds those records out of what you enter day to day. They are your records, and they are only ever as good as what you put in — it is software, not legal advice, and it is not a licence.

How the two fit together

One is public. One is private.

Breed Right — the shopfront

Public by design. A stud dog or a litter is listed here so the people looking for one can find it, and the claims on that listing are checked by a named person before the badge appears. Enquiries arrive in your Breed Right inbox.

Membership and pricing · what the checks mean

Whelpy — the back office

Private by design. Nothing you keep in Whelpy is published anywhere: it has no public directory, no public search and no public profile pages — the dogs, litters and buyers in it are visible to you, and to the buyer you send a link to. A dog you record in Whelpy is not advertised until you advertise it.

Which is the honest reason both exist: being found and being run are different jobs.

What the two do not do

Today

They do not talk to each other. Nothing you enter in one appears in the other. There is no import between them and no shared sign-in, so a listing here is typed here, whatever you keep your records in.

If that ever changes, this page will describe it plainly and it will be something you choose to switch on. Until then, do not buy either product expecting the other to fill it in.

What it costs

Free to keep records. Paid for the paperwork.

Whelpy’s two plans

Advert
Whelpy Lite — free
Free forever, no card, and not a trial. A new Whelpy account starts here. Seasons, matings, the whelping record, puppy weights and health, the buyer portal and the contract are all on this plan.
Whelpy Pro — £19.99 a month, or £199.99 a year
The total you pay. It adds the council record book, the tax-year accounts and the rest of the licensed-breeder paperwork described above.
Getting your accounts back out
The Excel and CSV export covers your accounts — income, expenses, mileage, time and an index of your documents — plus a zip of the documents themselves, and it is open on every plan including the free one, so a lapsed subscription never locks your books in. It is not an export of your dogs, litters or puppy records: Whelpy has no such export, and the pages that build the accounts are on the paid plan.

Whelpy’s own pricing page is the authority on what it costs and on what can be bought today. If it and this page ever disagree, believe Whelpy’s: whelpy.co.uk/pricing.

Straight answers

Before you take our word for any of it

Do I need Whelpy to use Breed Right?

No. Breed Right is a complete product on its own and always will be. Plenty of good breeders keep their records in a notebook and a spreadsheet, and a listing here works exactly the same for them.

Would a Whelpy account get my listing checked faster, or shown higher?

No. It is the same check, in the same queue, by the same person, against the same evidence — and where a listing appears has nothing to do with it. If one product could buy an advantage in the other, the badge would be worth nothing.

Is my data shared between the two?

No. Separate products, separate accounts, separate sign-ins, separate systems. Signing in to one does not sign you in to the other, and nothing you record in Whelpy is visible to anyone through Breed Right.

Each has its own privacy policy: ours and Whelpy’s. The same company runs both, so the same people are accountable for either.

What happens to my records if I stop paying Whelpy?

The accounts export — Excel and CSV, plus a zip of your uploaded documents — is included on every Whelpy plan including the free one, so getting your books out never depends on a subscription. Your dogs, litters, whelping records and puppy weights are all on the free plan too, so they stay visible to you; there is no export of them, in or out of a subscription. What else changes when a paid plan ends is set out in Whelpy’s terms, which are the binding version.

Why is this on Breed Right at all?

Because the same company makes both, and hiding that would be worse than saying it. The rule we set ourselves is that the selling lives on this page and on the page for breeders joining, is labelled as an advert both times, and stays out of the guides, the listings and the pages a puppy buyer reads. Everywhere else it is one link in the footer, under “Also from”, and a sentence on the About page saying who owns what. If you find it somewhere dressed up as advice, tell us — that would be a mistake, not a policy.

Who do I complain to?

The same company either way. For anything on this site, contact Breed Right. For Whelpy, the address on its own site is hello@whelpy.co.uk. Whelpy Ltd’s registered particulars are in the footer of every page here.
