About the Pyrenean Sheepdog (Smooth Faced)
The smooth-faced Pyrenean Sheepdog, the face rase, is the variety with short hair on the muzzle and around the eyes, which gives a longer, cleaner head than its rough-faced relative and a very different first impression. The Royal Kennel Club registers it separately in Britain, so it is worth confirming which variety a stud is before anything else.
Dogs stand a little taller than the long-haired variety, generally around 40 to 54 cm, with a semi-long coat on the body, short hair on the head and the front of the legs, and feathering behind. Colours run through fawn, grey, brindle and merle, with white markings permitted. The variety is athletic, very fast and highly reactive, and a stud should be steady under unfamiliar handling, because the breed's default setting is suspicion.
Ask for hip scores, a patellar assessment and a current eye certificate; the breed's recorded eye conditions include collie eye anomaly. Ask whether epilepsy has appeared in the pedigree. If both parties carry merle the mating should not go ahead. Ask about the coefficient of inbreeding as well, since the two varieties draw on a small shared population and British numbers are tiny.
Health & breeding
We check every hip, elbow, eye and DNA result you give us against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records by hand, and we record who checked it and when. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.

Health tests for the Pyrenean Sheepdog (Smooth Faced)
This panel is Breed Right’s summary of the testing that matters for the breed under The Royal Kennel Club Health Standard. The Health Standard is the Royal Kennel Club’s guidance for breeders, not a registration rule. It describes tests to ask about — it is not a report on any individual dog. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.
Breed club schemes listed in the Health Standard
Run by the breed club, not the Royal Kennel Club, which does not record their results. The Standard lists them as schemes to be aware of.
