About Breed Right

A UK stud dog and litter directory built on one idea: a claim about a dog should be worth something.

Why we exist

Breeding decisions deserve better information

Choosing a stud dog, or a breeder, is one of the most consequential decisions in dog breeding — and for years it has been made on directory pages where anyone can type anything. “KC registered”, “fully health tested”, “champion lines”: all claims, rarely checked, impossible to tell apart from the real thing.

Breed Right was built to close that gap without pretending. Every stud dog listed here is on the Royal Kennel Club Breed Register — not merely “has a KC number”, which the Activity Register hands to any dog including crossbreeds. And when a listing carries a “Verified” badge, it means a named member of our team actually checked the breeder’s declaration against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records, on a date we show you.

Just as importantly, we are honest about the limits. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested. So a missing record is never shown as a black mark — and an unchecked claim is never dressed up as a verified one.

Breed Right is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to The Royal Kennel Club.

How we work

Three promises we can actually keep

Breed Register only

Every stud dog on Breed Right is on the Royal Kennel Club Breed Register. The Royal Kennel Club also runs an Activity Register, which is open to any dog including crossbreeds — those dogs cannot be listed at stud here.

Checked by a person

The Royal Kennel Club publishes no data feed and offers no lookup service to sites like ours, so there is nothing to automate. Instead a named member of our team consults the Royal Kennel Club’s free public Health Test Results Finder, as any member of the public may, and writes down in their own words what they saw and on what date. We keep our own note. We never keep a copy of the Royal Kennel Club’s records, and we have no access to any Royal Kennel Club database.

Every claim labelled

Verified, in review, breeder-declared — the three states look different on every card, chip and table across the site. An unchecked claim never borrows the verified styling, and a missing record is never rendered as a failure.

Exactly what “Verified” means

Doing it properly

The details most directories skip

We don’t copy anyone’s data

We store what a breeder declares, the certificates they upload, and our own dated record of who checked what. We do not store copies of Royal Kennel Club records, and we have no access to any Royal Kennel Club database.

Every photo is properly licensed

Breed photography on Breed Right is used under an explicit licence — public domain or Creative Commons — with the author credited wherever the licence requires it, right on the image. Breeders’ own listing photos are their own. Nothing is lifted from other websites.

We’re an introduction service, not a marketplace

We put breeders and buyers in touch and give them better information to decide with. We are not a party to any stud arrangement or sale, we handle no payments between users, and a badge is never a guarantee of a dog’s health or temperament — always visit, ask questions and see paperwork in the original.

Who we are

Independent, and UK through and through

Breed Right is operated by Whelpy Ltd, an independent UK company. It is not owned by a kennel club, a pet marketplace or a venture fund — which is exactly why it can afford to be honest about what a badge does and doesn’t mean.

Whelpy Ltd also makes Whelpy, kennel-management software for running a kennel privately: seasons and matings, the whelping record, puppy weight charts, vaccination and worming due dates, and a private page for each puppy buyer.

Breed Right is where a dog is advertised and checked; Whelpy is where a kennel is run. They are separate products with separate accounts — a Whelpy account is never required here, is not for sale here, and having one never affects how a listing is checked or what a badge says.
