About the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer
The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer was developed after the Second World War from Weimaraner, Cesky Fousek and German Wirehaired Pointer stock, and it was designed as a complete gundog: quarter and point for birds, retrieve from water, and follow a blood trail to a wounded deer. It reached Britain only recently and remains uncommon here.
Colour gives it away, a uniform grey-brown that the standard calls khaki, over a harsh coat about four centimetres long with a beard and eyebrows; dogs stand 62 to 68 cm. This is a serious Slovakian pointer, tall and rangy, and not a breed for a household that cannot give it work. A stud should be confident with strangers and around stock, and lean rather than heavy.
Hip and elbow scores and a current eye certificate are the reasonable requests, and many British dogs also carry Slovak or Czech health paperwork worth reading in full. Ask about the working tests the dog has passed, since continental registers still tie breeding approval to ability. With so few animals in the country, ask as well how closely related the proposed pair are, and how long the imported grandparents lived.
Health & breeding
We check every hip, elbow, eye and DNA result you give us against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records by hand, and we record who checked it and when. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.
Health testing
Health tests for the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer
We haven’t published a health-test panel for this breed yet. That is a gap in our guidance, not a statement about the breed — many breeds have well-established screening schemes and DNA tests. Ask the breeder what testing applies, and see how verification works for how we check declared results.
