About the Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier exists because one man wanted something specific. Frantisek Horak, a Czech geneticist and huntsman, crossed the Sealyham with the Scottish Terrier in the years after the Second World War to get a narrower dog that could go to ground after boar and fox in the Bohemian forests and still be handled easily in a group.

It stands roughly 29 cm on short legs, with a long, silky, slightly wavy coat that is clipped rather than stripped, leaving furnishings on legs, chest and face. Adults are blue-grey or a light coffee brown, and puppies are born much darker and clear as they grow. The breed is quieter and more tractable than most of the terrier group, and a stud should show that steadiness rather than terrier fire.

An annual eye examination and a patella assessment are the practical requests, and a cardiac check is worth asking for. The breed is numerically small everywhere, so the owner's knowledge of the pedigree carries real weight: ask about the inbreeding coefficient, ask about any history of the episodic muscle cramping that Scottish Terrier lines are known for, and ask how the older dogs in the family have aged.

Health & breeding

We check every hip, elbow, eye and DNA result you give us against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records by hand, and we record who checked it and when. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.

Health testing

Health tests for the Cesky Terrier

We haven’t published a health-test panel for this breed yet. That is a gap in our guidance, not a statement about the breed — many breeds have well-established screening schemes and DNA tests. Ask the breeder what testing applies, and see how verification works for how we check declared results.
