About the Komondor

The Komondor is Hungary's large livestock guardian, a white dog that lives among the flock and is meant to be hard to pick out from the sheep until it moves. Like the Puli it carries a corded coat, but on a far bigger frame, and those cords take several years to form properly.

Dogs stand from about 70 cm and can weigh over 50 kg, always white, with a coat that must be separated by hand and never brushed. The breed is nocturnal by inclination, barks at night on purpose, and takes its own decisions about who is welcome; a Komondor stud should be steady and biddable enough to be examined by a vet, because size combined with suspicion is a difficult inheritance in the wrong home.

Ask for hip and elbow scores and for a current eye certificate, as entropion occurs in the breed. Bloat is a real danger in a deep-chested giant, so ask what has happened in the line and how the dog is fed. Ask about skin problems under the cords, which are easy to miss, and about how long the stud's parents lived, since the giant breeds are not long-lived.

Health & breeding

We check every hip, elbow, eye and DNA result you give us against the Royal Kennel Club’s public records by hand, and we record who checked it and when. The Royal Kennel Club’s public records may not include all the screening a dog has had, so a dog with no Royal Kennel Club record showing is not necessarily untested.

Health testing

Health tests for the Komondor

We haven’t published a health-test panel for this breed yet. That is a gap in our guidance, not a statement about the breed — many breeds have well-established screening schemes and DNA tests. Ask the breeder what testing applies, and see how verification works for how we check declared results.
