Originally bred to retrieve fishing nets and game in Newfoundland, the Labrador combines a soft mouth, a love of water and a famously even temperament. That working heritage makes them quick to train and happiest with a job to do.

Health & breeding

Responsible Labrador breeding centres on health testing. Look for hip and elbow scores at or below the breed average, a current clear eye certificate, and DNA results clear for PRA (prcd) and EIC. Every stud listed on Breed Right has these results verified against the Kennel Club.
